Community Service

OSDAR carries out the objectives of the National Society through a variety of programs in their local communities:

  1. Community Service Awards recognize local citizens for outstanding achievements in cultural, educational, humanitarian, patriotic and citizenship work in their communities;

  2. Constitution Week was initiated by the DAR in 1955 and adopted by the U.S. Congress in 1956. DAR sponsors special programs during the week of September 17-23 to inform and educate the public about the United States Constitution.

  3. As a member of the National Veterans Administration Voluntary Service Advisory Committee, DAR has representatives in Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Centers throughout Ohio. Members also volunteer in community based programs, and provide support to troops involved in America’s worldwide war against terrorism.

  4. Thousands of flags, flag codes, certificates and other patriotic literature are distributed annually.

  5. OSDAR chapters and members participate in local commemorative events and with other community service organizations who share our objectives.

  6. OSDAR owns, maintains and operates the Christian Waldschmidt Homestead in Camp Dennison, Ohio, comprising three museums: Waldschmidt House, the home of Revolutionary Patriot, Christian Waldschmidt; the Memorial Barn housing farm implements of the pioneer era and a restored Conestoga wagon; and the Camp Dennison Civil War Museum. The Boy Scout American Heritage Badge program and other youth programs are offered at the homestead.
