Colonel Jonathan Bayard Smith Chapter, Middletown, Ohio
Daughters of the American Revolution
Red White Blue bar

Mrs. Helen Peters was the first regent of the Colonel Jonathan Bayard Smith Chapter. The first organizational meeting was at her home. There were 25 members. We have approximately 50 (actually 37 members). We give Good Citizen Awards to seniors at seven area high schools, count and send coupons overseas for military families (over $259,000 worth from April 2008 to September 2011), have a Constitution Week display at the Middletown Public Library, and help with Ohio DAR's Waldschmidt House Museum. Many of our members subscribe to the American Spirit magazine (National DAR's magazine). We give free subscriptions to new members and to public libraries.

Our chapter was named for Colonel Jonathan Bayard Smith, the ancestor of our oldest charter member Mrs. David Gruver, nee Miss Sarah Jane Smith, a great-granddaughter of the Revolutionary officer. He was a young Philadelphian. On February 1777, he was a delegate to the Continental Congress, and then again from April 4, 1777, to November 13, 1778. In the formation of the fourth battalion, he commanded the Philadelphia Brigade. He was commissioned first lieutenant colonel. Subsequently he organized the Jonathan Bayard Smith Battalion which entered into service on August 1, 1774.

Many of our members live in Trenton, Middletown, Monroe, Franklin, and in Butler and Warren Counties. Some live far away but have ties to our area. We normally have a speaker at our meetings. Please contact us by e-mail if you are interested in joining our chapter. There are other chapters in the area which meet on Saturday mornings, and we can direct you to one of them if you wish. We have knowledgeable members who will be willing to help you to complete your papers.
